When Sierra magazine editor Jason Mark stepped into his new role a few years ago, he had just walked through Nevada’s Carson-Iceberg Wilderness, surrounded by massive wildfires. That solo experience shaped his mission to lead this magazine dedicated to causes to protect the planet, natural spaces, and outdoor recreation. Glamping, conservation efforts, fishing for a record-setting marlin, and a Canadian’s guide to the Louvre. Those are just a few of the the types of stories featured in Air Canad’s in-flight magazine enRoute. In the most recent issue, you’ll learn about rolling pins from the Colonial era, the evolution of the bald eagle as America’s mascot, brewing in the 1700s, and more.
When you write, assume that your reader is a knowledgeable peer. Writing a beginner article about a technology is great , but you can assume a starting point of familiarity with web technologies. Before you read on, please note that our feature articles generally steer clear of stories about fine art, and the artists behind it. While any works of craftsmanship should be, and often are, aesthetically beautiful, they are primarily made as items to be used; this is the world we generally live in and investigate. We also do not typically cover the DIY movement, as there are so many publications already doing that well. If that sounds like your jam, we’d love to hear from you. We’re steadily growing, and we’re looking for some dependable freelance writers to contribute to our website on a monthly basis. While we have a few writers on staff, currently these freelance positions are unpaid — unfortunately, we’re operating on an extremely low budget, but hoping to change that as we grow.
We are interested in how-to stories, reported pieces, narrative essays, and profiles of writers and others in the field. TFM generally publishes 3-5 “feature” articles in its quarterly issues. Features can run anywhere from 2000 to 2,500 words and are not intended to be advertisements. Other articles generally run from 1200 to 1,500 words.
We don’t include citations, though we do encourage our writers to mention the journal in which a study was published and/or the study’s author, ideally linking to the abstract of that study. History on The Netis nearly 20 years old and get 1.5-2 million visitors a month. Our readers include secondary and university students, professionals, and history aficionados of all ages.
